Trayning

Trayning lies approximately 61kms. North of Kellerberrin and is the administrative centre for a large agricultural area,the town contains a number of fine commercial buildings testimony to it's past importance although today the population is very much reduced from what it once was.The Cenotaph is situated in the main street. The top of the obelisk is missing whether by design or accident is not known.Facing the main street is the WW I plaque inscribed "To the memory of the men from Trayning and Yelbeni district who laid down their lives in the Great War 1914-19",at the rear is another marble plaque inscribed with the names of those who died;twentyfive names in total. The WW II plaque is mounted on the Eastern side and bears the same inscription,except for the dates,as the WW1 plaque,four persons are shown as killed in action including Ian Lindsay Felgate,Flying Officer, who was post'humously awarded the Distinguished flying Cross for" Fortitude,Courage and Devotion on numerous operations ". The Lieutenant-Govenor of Western Australia presented the award to the Widow of Flying Officer Felgate at Government House,Perth in January 1947. The Trayning Shire Hall contains an Honour Board giving the names of all Trayning residents who served in WW1, pictures of this board are shown on the Trayning Primary School website
