Quairading

 

 

The town lies 166kms.East of Perth,the administrative area covers 2000sq.kms. with a total population of 1224,main occupation......grains and sheep. On the front,left and right hand are plaques commemorating those who served in the 1914-19 War. One hundred and eightyfour names and the units they were in are recorded with thirtyone killed in action,eight died of wounds and twelve wounded;one person shown as prisoner of war. Decorations awarded,Military Medal & Mentioned in Despatches.....Pte.G.McLennan,Distinguished Conduct Medal.....Sgt. H.P.Walker, Croix de Guerre(Belgium)......Sgt. E.E.Simpson,Twentytwo are shown as serving at Gallipoli.On the rear of the Monument is a plaque commemorating those who gave their lives in the 1939-45 War,twenty names are recorded.In early 2001 the road was re-aligned causing the landscaping around the Memorial to be changed and,at the same time, a Wall of Honour was constructed naming all persons from the Quairading District who served in WW2 and Vietnam,the three plaques record a total of 182 names including 31 women and show12 persons KIA (including 1 Nurse killed in the Banka massacre),8 DOW (mostly POW),14 POW and 6 wounded.
