Pingelly

This town is on the Great Southern Highway 158kms S/East of Perth and is the administrative centre for an area of 1223sq.kms.containing a population of 1135 with the main industry being agricultural.Herbert James,a Pingelly resident,served at Gallipoli where he won the Military Cross and,subsequently,became the youngest Major in the Australian Army at that time.As a Lt.Col.in the 2nd.World War,Herbert James was posted to Broome after the first Japanese air raid as Administrator.This memorial is in the form of a rotunda with commemorative plaques let into the walls on both sides of the entrance steps in remembrance of those who fell in the 1914-19 War,seventyone names are inscribed. Inside the rotunda,directly opposite the entrance, is a plaque remembering those who died in the 1939-45 War,thirteen names are shown.
