Nungarin
This town lies 40kms. North of Merredin and is the administrative centre for an area of 1145sq.kms. containing a population of 300. During WW2 it was an important Army centre and now contains an Army Museum in the grounds of which is a Memorial to the staff of 110 Army General Hospital who maintained a sick bay there.This Hall bears a plaque on the verandah which reads" In proud memory of those who died in two World Wars 1914-18 and 1939-45 opened by the Govenor General Sir Charles Gardiner,Sept.4th.1957" Inside the Hall are two plaques(see Honour Board page), one of these is a very good example of a repousse' Honour Roll,the brass plate at the top reads"Erected by the settlers of Nungarin and District in honour of the gallant boys who enlisted to fight for their country" below this inscription is the date "28th.February 1917",on the left is the Union Jack and on the right the Australian Flag in repousse';both side columns feature crossed sabres and a field gun with the date '1914 on the top of the left column and '1919' on the right. The brass name tags total eightynine with twentyfour noted as killed in action.
