No.16 P.O.W. Camp

During WW2 the Army Camp at northam was used to house Italian Prisoners of War,some 3,500 passed through its gates. In 1946, when repatriation back to Italy started, the Camp Commandant, Major Foley, gave permission for the prisoners to leave a rememberance of their stay. This took the form of two concrete pillars, one on each side of the Northern entrance to the parade ground,in one of these were placed a list of the names of all the prisoners including the names of the 22 who died in captivity in Western Australia. The left hand pillar is inscribed"21-9-46 P.O.W. Italiani"
