Mokine
Mokine is an area within the Northam Shire near Spencers Brook,a hilly terrain with numerous granite outcrops that make access difficult, today there are many smallholdings but in 1942 it was practically uninhabited. On October 9th.,1942 an Avro Anson plane of the RAAF on a training flight from Pearce Air Base crashed and all four crew were killed. Members of the Bakers Hill & Clackline Volunteer Defence Corps and other locals erected a cairn of stones at the crash site and mounted a cross on top (still in place) carved on which were brief details of the tragedy and the names of the dead, the site was dedicated on 19th.,December,1942. Post war the site was largely forgotten until the Perth Branch of the Royal Australian Air Force Assn. carried out restoration work and had the site re-dedicated by Bishop D.Bryant DFC on 25th.Novmber,1984.,the Assn.holds an annual rememberance ceremony at the site in October. Recently, the road running past the site was re-named Avro Anson Rd.
