45km.N/E of Northam, this town has a population of 530 plus and is the centre for a large grain growing and sheep area. The War memorial Hall is an imposing brick and iron building in Quinlan St.with an auditorium that could easily accommodate in excess of 200 people, the foundation stone on the rigt hand side of the main entrance reads:
War Memorial Hall "This stone was laid by the Hon.W.J.George Esq.MLA, Minister for Works, 25th.May 1922" On the wall just inside the entrance are two Honour Boards,an ornately carved one that records the names of all who served in WW1(20 shown as killed in action) and one of a more utilitarian design recording those who served in WW2,Korea and Vietnam. In 2003 a Memorial was constructed in the main street in front of the Railway Station, it comprises a rather uninspiring lump of local stone bearing a metal plaque plus three flag poles set in a fairly large brick paved area, The plaque bears the badges of the three services and reads:
to the left are ten plaques set into the paving each one bearing the name of a conflict in which Australian forces have been involved from the Boxer Rebellion to the Gulf War plus one other for peace keeping duties. At the base of the Memorial is a plaque donated by Purslowe Funeral Homes recording that the Memorial was unveiled by H.E. Lt.Gen. John Sanderson AC,Govenor General of Western Australia on 12th.April,2003. Between the flagpoles and the road kerb a smaller lump of rock is positioned; it's purpose is unclear.
