Gnowangerup

Situated some 350km S.E.of Perth the town is the administrative centre for Gnowangerup Shire, a large agricultural area for grain and sheep with some of the best Merino Studs in the State. The town has a population of approx.750. Much of the agricultural land was opened up under Soldier Resettlement schemes following WW1&2. Gnowangerups' War Memorials are two in number, an obelisk in the usual style in a small park at the entrance to the Town and a Hall in the main street.

The Memorial Hall was built in 1923 at a cost in excess of 3000 Pounds by builder S.Cresswell of Guildford to the design of Architect George Herbert Parry of Perth. A donation of 850 Pounds from the Returned Services League and the Soldiers Aid Committee and a loan to the Gnowangerup Road Board of 2000 Pounds from Mr.Andrew Moir of 'Sandalwood' (a local agricultural property) met the majority of the cost. Within the entrance portico is the foundation stone

The completed building was opened by the Govenor Sir Francis Newdegate on 4th.August 1923.
