Dowerin
Dowerin,a small agricultural town some 70kms from Northam with a population of 370 is the administrative centre for the Shire of the same name. The Memorial is located in Centenary Park at the intersection of Government Rd. and Cottrell St. Front and both sides bear marble plaques recording the names of those who died in WW1,fifty names are shown, the rear plaque commemerates those who died in WW2 (7) and the Korean War (1). The front of the base has a plaque"Lest We Forget" . In the photo, above right, R.J.Reid is shown as being awarded a posthumous Military Medal - the exact phrase is from the official citation acompanying the medal - this is unusual as Military Medals are not,as a rule, awarded posthumously. Reginald Reid came from a farming family, his father had been gassed in WW1and was not able to run the farm on his own so during WW2 Reginald was, under the Manpower Act, restricted to working on the farm. After WW2 one of the returned soldiers came to a share farming agreement with Reid Snr. releasing Reginald from farming. He went to New Zealand where he joined the Army,at the time of his death in Korea he held the rank of Sergeant. The London Gazette of 19th.June,1953 records that Sgt.206204 Reginald James Reid of Kayforce was posthumously awarded the Military Medal for gallant conduct.
