Bruce Rock

The town is 50kms.South of Merredin with an administrative area of 2772sq.kms.containing a population of 1250,main occupation is agriculture.... grains and sheep. The monument is made of dressed sandstone with a four faced clock at the apex,at each corner of the clock case a miniature rifle is mounted. The front of the monument bears two brass plaques,on the left giving brief information on Australian involvement in Wars 1885 to 1918 and on the right the same for period 1939 to 1973.The left hand side has a plaque commemorating the men who fell in the 1914-18 War,thirtysix names are inscribed. The right hand side bears a plaque commemorating those who fell in the 1939-45 War,nineteen names are inscribed.although the Memorial bears the names of those killed in WW 1 the actual WW 1 Memorial is the District Hospital which was built by public subscription,a sixtyfive pound donation from the Roads Board and a sevenhundred & fifty pound subsidy from the Western Australian Govt, the Hospital was opened in 1922. After WW 2 it was initially proposed to commemorate those who served by erecting Memorial Gates at the Hospital but this proposal was lost to the present Memorial pictured. In passing it is of interest to note that in the 1939-45 War, at Ardath,a sub-district,an ammunition depot covering 2000acres with some sixty plus storage sheds containing 18,000tons of ammunition was established in 1942.After the war the area reverted to agricultural use and, today, there is no evidence of its former role.
