Beverley

Administrative centre for the Shire of Beverley which covers 2310 sq.kms.with a total population of 1474,the town of Beverley is situated 129kms.East of Perth on the Great Southern Highway. The Memorial is located in the main street adjacent to the railway crossing and comprises a granite obelisk mounted on four square granite blocks diminishing in size from the ground up.At the front on the second block up is mounted a brass plate which reads"Erected by the People of Beverley Road Board District to Perpetuate the Names of the Gallant Men who Offered Their Services and left Australia to take part in the Great War of 1914-1919 for Home and Empire",the Die Stone above bears brass plates on all four sides containing 210 names of which 45 are shown as killed in action. It is noted that the brass work was by S.A.Launder,20,Queen St.,Perth.The Beverley Times of April 1920 carries a photo of the Memorial on Anzac Day,it is swathed in a flag and garlanded with wreaths just prior to unveiling and dedication.

The lych gate to St.Marys Anglican Church bears two brass plaques showing the names of church members killed in WW1 & 2.

In 2005 the Beverley Returned Services League proposed a plan to upgrade the area surrounding the War Memorial, a project that was completed (left picture)in time for the 2006 Anzac Day Remembrance Service. Unfortunately the new work did not complement the War Memorial but ,in fact, detracted from it. Since the 2006 Anzac Day ceremony the Beverley RSL has made the new brick wall the focus of the ceremonies held, even to the point of having wreaths laid at the foot of the wall. The War Memorial which for 85 years was central to the Remembrance ceremonies of the Beverley residents now stands to all intents and purposes ignored; as shown in the picture on the right.
