Yarloop
From 1895 until 1978 Yarloop was the centre for Millars Timber Co. logging operations in the South West and apart from sawmilling was the site for Millars workshops that serviced all their eqipment including the trains used for timber extraction. Today the town is only a shadow of its former self, what remains of the workshops is now a museum and most of the houses built by the Co. for it's workers have disappeared. The Memorial, designed and built by Pietro Porcelli*, is situated in Railway Parade in front of the workshop and close to the Mill Boarding House built in the 1890s. The four Lions at the base of the Memorial were sculpted from Augustan marble from the Barossa Valley whilst the obelisk is of dressed granite,on the diestone above the dedication shown above is a brass plaque headed " The Heroic Dead, Their name liveth for evermore" which bears Fiftyeight names, below is a smaller plaque headed "1939 - 45 War " followed by Fourteen names. The remaining three sides of the diestone bear brass plaques headed with the AIF badge and the words " The Brave", names recorded on these total Two Hundred.
