Mandurah
Situated on an estuary on the shores of the Indian Ocean with a population of 42,000, 74km.South of Perth,Mandurah is the preferred retirement and holiday place for many West Australians. Originally the War Memorial was located on the Western bank of the estuary, opposite the town. However, this area has recently been developed for housing and a new Memorial has been built outside the new RSL building on the corner of Anzac Place and Third Avenue. On the left hand side of the monument is affixed a brass plate headed " They paid the supreme sacrifice " seven names are shown, the front carries three plaques the top,and larger one, reads " In memory of those who gave their lives in defence of their country ,Lest We Forget ". Of the other two plaques one commemerates the Unknown Soldier and the other the women's services. When the original Memorial was demolished it was promised that a new one would be built somewhere in the town precincts. In mid 2004 a tender for the design and construction of the Memorial by Hames Sharley was accepted by the Council at a price believed to be in excess of $250,000/-; the site selected is on the Western foreshore of the Estuary opposite the town of Mandurah. In essence the Memorial will comprise a row of pillars of various heights straddling a small rise with the axis of the row lying along the line of the Sun's rays as it rises on Anzac Day. The picture below of the Memorial under construction was taken from Henry Sutton Grove across the entrance to the Halls Head canal system in early March, 2005.
