Kojonup

A town with a population of 1200 it was established in 1837 as a military outpost on the route from PerthTo Albany,256km South of Perth, administrative centre for a large agricultural area;it is claimed that the Shire was the first in Western Australia to achieve a sheep population of one million. The Memorial is sited outside the new RSL Hall(opened in 1952 by Brigadier Potts ) on the corner of Albany Highway and Spencer St.on part of the land that was purchased by the Kojunup RSL after WW1 for 35 Pound and bears a plaque recording the names of those who fell in WW1 and WW2 a total of fiftyseven names (WW1-33,WW2-24);the remainder of the land is now a public park.After WW1 the local branch of the RSL was formed and a decision was made to erect an obelisk to honour the war dead,however,due to lack of public facilities in the town this decision was dropped in favour of a Memorial Hall with a Hall of Honour for the ex-Serviceman. After years of fund raising and a Government loan the foundation stone was laid by J.G.Finlay,RSL on 11th.November,1925 and the opening ceremony was performed by Major General Sir Talbot Hobbs on 20th.August,1928.
