Greenbushes

Greenbushes,251km.South of Perth, was founded in 1888 following the discovery of tin in the area in 1886, subsequently,in addition to tin mining, a timber logging industry was established. By WW1 the town was quite large with a population of 2000,today,although tin is still mined, the population is only 395. The Memorial is located in Blackwood Road on the edge of Thomson Park and comprises a series of steps with flanking walls surmounted by the figure of a soldier in bas-relief*, the Memorial is noteworthy not only for it's unusual design but because it was unveiled by a Prime Minister of Australia, maybe the only one in Western Australia granted this honour. The rear wall bears the plaque shown right above whilst below it are two small plaques inscribed with the names of five Servicemen killed in WW2,the side walls carry four plaques recording those who served in WW1 190 names are shown. Brass plaques on the front pillars record the names of those who served in WW2 and Vietnam, 124 names for WW2 and 4 names for Vietnam

*This figure, smaller than the Bridgetown one is identical in all other aspects and was also sculpted by Gordon Holdsworthy.
