Brookhampton

A hilly rural locality in the Donnybrook-Balingup Shire to the East of the South West Highway between Donnybrook and Kirup, originally known as Thomsons Brook. Settled in the late 1800s for the extraction of timber from the surrounding forests it is now an area of small holdings engaged in the fruit and dairy/cattle industries and,in recent years, vineyards and wine production. The War Memorial, of polished granite construction and built by Messrs Peters & Gillies according to a small metal plate attached to the r/h side of the base stone, is situated on the edge of Brookhampton Road alongside the Brookhampton Hall, the dedication inscribed on the Memorial reads:
To honor and perpetuate the memory of those brave men who enlisted from Thomsonsbrook for service in the Great War 1914-1918
The Hall is a large building of weatherboard walls and tin roof built in 1899. The Oak tree gracing the front of the hall is of a girth and height to indicate that it was probably planted there when the Hall was built.
