Roebourne, 1560kms. North of Perth, was established in 1866 and is the oldest Town on the North West Coast. Until the 1960s it was a major Northern Town with a number of fine Government buildings, an administrative and service centre for a large area. Unfortunately it was bypassed by the iron ore industry in favour of the new towns of Karratha and Dampier; the former now housing the Roebourne Shire Council. The Memorial is sited on the median strip in Roe St. outside the old Shire Office and bears marble plaques on all four sides recording the names of men of the Roebourne area who served in WW1, a total of 176 with 20 noted as "Died For The Empire". Conflicts subsequent to WW1 are not mentioned.
