Newman, located on the Gt.Northern Highway 1185kms. from Perth, was established as a Company Town by Mount Newman Mining Co. in the 1960s to house their workers, today the town has a population of 5000 plus and is administered by the East Pilbara Shire. Current mining operations are centred on Mount Whaleback, the largest open cut iron ore mine in the world. The Memorial stands adjacent to the Shire Office on the corner of Kalgan and Newman Drives, the metal plaque comprising a wreath enclosing a silver sun burst and swan is of superior craftmanship.
