1st. & 2nd./16th.Battalion


This Memorial,located a short distance away from the State Memorial,honours Members of the 2/16th.Btn. who fought and fell in WW2 ,the Memorial records those campaigns in which they fought. The bas relief plaque sited adjacent to the Memorial gives details of the Kokoda Track campaign.

The original 16th.Btn,the 1st.,was raised in 1914 with the majority of it's members being West Australians who did their initial training at Blackboy Hill. No Memorial to the 1st. existed until, through the efforts of members of the 2/16th.Btn. Assn.,the one shown above was built close to the 2/16th.Memorial and unveiled by the W.A.Governor, Lt.Gen. John Sanderson, on Sunday 14th. September,2003. The plaque mounted on the granite pedestal records the ten major battle areas in which the 1/16th. served, from Gallipoli in 1915 to the Hindenburg Line in 1918 and,in the centre, depicts an Infantryman with a WW1 Tank in the background. Below, in silhouette, are shown a group of Soldiers above the inscription " in memory of those who served the 16th.Battalion during the Great War". One of the most highly decorated units of WW1, the 1/16th was awarded 267 decorations including three Victoria Crosses. Amongst those present at the unveiling was Keith Norrish ex 2/16th. and President of the 2/16th.Btn.Assn. whose father served in the 1/16th. in WW1
