Guildford

Part of the Midland administrative area,Guildford is situated on the main East/West Highway some 12kms.East of Perth G.P.O.This Cenotaph stands in the grounds of St.Matthews Church opposite the Post Office,the foundation stone was laid by General Sir W.R.Birdwood CMG,CBE (Officer Commanding ANZAC landing at Gallipoli) on January 4th.1920;it is flanked by two artillery pieces one of which can be seen on the left in the photo above.The front of the Column is inscribed "In honour of the men who did their duty at their country's call and in memory of the men who laid down their lives for honour,freedom and justice with the Australian Imperial Forces in the Great War 1914-1919"Their names live for evermore"."Erected by the citizens of Guildford." Below this inscription is a small brass plaque which reads" In memory of the fallen and the unknown Australian soldier 75th.Anniversary of Remembrance Day 11/11/93". Two of the other three sides are devoted to the 1914-19 War and bear some 220 names,the last side commemorates the 1939-45 War and bears 75 names. The monument bears the legend 'P.Porcelli,Sculptor' , a well known artist responsible for many public sculptures. On Sunday December 19th.1920 the Archbishop of Perth held a special service in St.Matthews to dedicate and unveil a Memorial tablet within the church recording the parishioners who died in WW1.
