This Memorial,built in 1928 from Donnybrook stone and designed by Architects Allen & Nicholas,is the third largest in Australia;sited on Monument Hill it replaced an obelisk used as a navagational aid for ships entering Fremantle Harbour. In both wars Fremantle served as a major embarkation point for troops going overseas plus,in WW2,it became an important base for operations against the Japanese in S.E.Asia. The Memorials commemorating those forces operating out of Fremantle in WW2 are sited on the concourse to the rear of the Memorial.
