East Victoria Park

On the corner of Ramsden Avenue and Playfield St.,East Victoria Park are the headquarters if the Victoria Park RSL Sub-Branch, the building is called Gurney Hall in honour of Private Arthur Gurney 2/48th.Battalion who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry in Egypt in 1942. The forecourt in front of the building has an eight sided Brick Memorial dedicated to those who served in all conflicts from the Boer War to Vietnam,seven of the sides bear bronze plaques recording the names of Victoria Park residents who served in WW2, Korea, Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam, a total of 1213 names are shown. Just off the paved forecourt,amongst the trees, is a separate Memorial to Aboriginal servicemen and women. From the side of Gurney Hall a fenced walkway goes down to Hillview Terrace, at various points along the walk are engraved wooden posts recording the conflicts in which the Royal Australian Regiment* have been involved since 1948. At the start of the walk is a stone bearing a bronze plaque which reads:

Memorial Walk

Dedicated to the members of the Regiment who have made the supreme sacrifice for their country and the Regiment whilst on overseas service since the formation of the Regiment on the 23rd.November,1948.

The Memorial Walk indicating the areas of operation was officially opened by The Hon.Graham Edwards MHR on the 10th.March, 2002

* Prior to the Formation of R.A.R., Army units serving overseas were designated 'Australian Imperial Force ( A.I.F.)
