Bassendean

 

 

Located 10km from Perth GPO the Bassendean Shire has an area of 11sq.kms. with a population of 13,000 The Monument is located in the main street of the shopping area outside the administrative offices and library. The Library site was originally the Memorial Gardens and the monument was unveiled and dedicated there on the corner of wilson St. and Perth Rd. in 1923(top picture,note fieldgun on right,present whereabouts unknown),however,in the early 1970s the Library was built on the Memorial Gardens site and the monument was moved,and radically changed, losing it's four step base and correctly formed obelisk. The front bears the following "Erected by the citizens of West Guildford to commemorate the Great War of 1914-1919 . In honour of those who fought and fell in defence of the Empire" twentyeight names are shown. Below this is a small brass plaque commemorating the 75th. anniversary of World War 1. The right hand side commemorates the 2nd.World War and shows fortysix names below which is a plaque reading as follows"1939-45 to commemorate all those who served...Bassendean RSL." On the rear are inscribed fortyfive names below which is a plaque inscribed " 1962-72 to commemorate all those who served...Bassendean RSL" On the fourth side are inscribed fortytwo names below which is a plaque which reads "1948-60 to commemorate all those who served......Bassendean RSL
