Gingin

The town of Gingin is one of the oldest in the State, located 84kms.North of Perth with a population of 470 it is the administrative centre for the surrounding agricultural area. The Memorial is located in a park in front of the Council Offices at the intersection of Weld and Brockman Streets in the town centre. The base stone bears a brass plaque reading

"Erected by the residents of Gingin on July 12th.,1942 in honour of Jim Gordon V.C. whose gallant action on the battlefield in Syria on July 10th.,1941 won him the supreme miltary distinction" *

Above,on the die stone, are inscribed 24 names with a further 23 names on the opposite side. The Left side is headed "Died on Service" and bears ten names followed by "1914-!918", the right side bears the same heading and carries eight names followed by "1939-1945".

*Pte.James Heather Gordon,2/31st.Battalion,25th.Brigade,7th Division was awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicious gallantry at "Green Hill" North ofJennin,Syria 10th.July,1941when his Coy. was pinned down by intense machinegun fire he crawled forward and overcame the machinegun post by rifle and bayonet.Announced in the London Gazette on 24th.October,1941, Private Gordon was presented with his award by the Govenor General at Admiralty House,Sydney 26th.September,1942.
