Southern Cross

Southern Cross(pop.980) is on the Gt.Eastern Highway 370kms.East of Perth,it is the site of one of the first gold finds in 1888 and,today,is the administrative centre for the Shire of Yilgarn. The Memorial stands in a small fenced garden on Antares St.opposite the Anglican Church,mounted on a granite block base it stands some ten metres high. The front of the Memorial bears a marble plaque reading:

Erected by the people of Southern Cross and Districts in reverent memory of the late residents of Yilgarn who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War

Lest We Forget

Above this a larger marble plaque inscribed 'For King and Country 1914 - 1918' below which is the AIF Crest followed by sixty names,an identically headed plaque on the l/h side bears some 25 names. On the r/h side is a plaque headed in the same way except the period shown is 1939 - 1945,it bears 19 names. Each side of the top of the second tier carries the name of a major battle area of WW1;Palestine,Belgium,France,Gallipoli.
