Kalgoorlie

Kalgoorlie is the centre for gold mining in the State and was established following the initial gold discovery in 1893, 600kms.East of Perth, the population today is 25,000. The Memorial stands in the forecourt of the Railway Station and was designed and constructed by P.Porcelli and comprises a central column inscribed:

To Our Glorious Dead

1914 - 1918 , 1939 - 1945

supporting a cast bronze figure of a Soldier on guard with fixed bayonet, the base of the column has a buttress surmounted by a carved marble lion at each corner. The whole is surrounded by a steel fence with an entrance gate at the front, as can be seen in the photo the effect has been rather spoilt by somebody,in their wisdom, siting a light pole in the centre of the approach to the gate. A granite plaque placed on the base stone at the front reads:

"This Memorial erected by the citizens of Kalgoorlie was unveiled by Major General Sir Talbot Hobbs on 1st.October,1923"

On each shoulder of the base stone are large brass shields (shown above and identical to the ones on the Leederville Memorial)bearing the names of the areas of conflict in which Australian forces were engaged in WW1, individual names are not shown.
